Collaboration Between Forestry and Steel Industry Targets Emissions Reduction in Canada
A partnership between the forestry and steel sectors aims to lower emissions in Canada's $15 billion steel industry, aligning with sustainability objectives. The initiative involves utilizing biocarbon energy sources to decarbonize various steel production processes.

The Canadian steel industry, valued at $15 billion, is exploring partnerships with the forestry sector to reduce carbon emissions during production. Graeme Scott of ArcelorMittal outlined potential biocarbon applications at the Ontario Forest Industries Association Convention, focusing on processes such as cokemaking and electric arc furnace steelmaking.
Trials are currently underway through the Canadian Iron and Steel Energy Research Association's R&D program to assess biocarbon as a substitute for traditional carbon inputs. While challenges remain regarding supply and production compatibility, the initiative could significantly enhance decarbonization efforts in Ontario's steel sector.
