Consortium Launches Pongamia Cultivation Pilot in Indonesia's Former Coal Mine
A consortium involving Mitsui O.S.K. Lines and others has initiated a Pongamia cultivation project in Indonesia. This five-year pilot aims to evaluate the plant's viability for biofuel and carbon credits, utilizing a former coal mine site.

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, PT Hasnur Group Indonesia, Hanwa Co., Ltd., NH Foods Ltd., Four Pride Management Pte. Ltd., and SPIL Ventures have formed a consortium to cultivate Pongamia in Tapin Regency, South Kalimantan, Indonesia.
The project will span approximately 10 hectares of a former coal mine over five years, from 2026 to 2031, focusing on growth data collection and evaluating Pongamia's potential as a biofuel feedstock and source of carbon credits. This initiative reflects a broader commitment to sustainability and resource management in the region, highlighting opportunities for commercialization based on the project's findings.
