Corps Awards $1.8B in Dam Safety Contracts to Barnard Construction in Southern California
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded Barnard Construction contracts totaling $1.8 billion for dam safety upgrades in Southern California. Significant enhancements at Prado and Whittier Narrows Dams are set to begin by spring 2027, with completion expected by 2033, ensuring ongoing flood risk management.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded Barnard Construction a combined $1.8 billion for two dam safety projects in Southern California, specifically the Prado Dam modification at $1.13 billion and the Whittier Narrows Dam contract for $735 million.
Construction at both sites is scheduled to start in spring 2027 and is projected to wrap up by 2033, with both dams remaining operational throughout the process. The Prado project includes replacing the spillway with a labyrinth design and raising the spillway crest by 20 ft.
Enhancements at Whittier Narrows will address safety improvements due to its classification as high-risk in an urban area, focusing on the embankment and outlet structures. Integrated design and early contractor involvement are key strategies to improve project delivery.
