Counterfeit Ledger Device Identified with Espressif Systems Connection
A counterfeit Ledger device, purchased by a Brazilian researcher from a Chinese marketplace, revealed links to Espressif Systems. This discovery highlights the growing sophistication of scams targeting cryptocurrency users.

A Brazilian researcher uncovered a counterfeit Ledger Nano S Plus while investigating a purchase from a Chinese marketplace. The device, which passed initial legitimacy checks, failed Ledger's built-in 'Genuine Check' when connected to the official Ledger Live app, leading to further examination that revealed tampered hardware and firmware designed to compromise user data.
The firmware analysis identified Espressif Systems, a semiconductor company based in Shanghai, as the manufacturer. Only official Ledger products, purchased from ledger.com, should be used to ensure security. The incident underscores the increasing complexity of scams targeting self-custody cryptocurrency users, posing significant risks to new investors.
