CPC Corporation Taiwan Begins Electricity Generation at 5.4-MW Yilan Tuchang Geothermal Power Plant

GEOTHERMAL

The 5.4-MW Tuchang geothermal power plant in Yilan County, Taiwan, has started electricity generation, marking it as the first geothermal plant in Taiwan with an installed capacity above 5 MW. Development began in 2020, facing challenges including land acquisition and natural disasters that delayed construction.

The facility began trial operations on December 21, 2025, and official generation commenced on January 31, 2026. CPC Corporation Taiwan has identified land acquisition, community communication, and high costs as bottlenecks to geothermal expansion. They propose a public-to-public model for land issues and continue to explore geothermal sites, including the Yuanshan and Dongshan wells.
