Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency Confirms Geothermal Potential at All Exploration Sites
The Croatian Hydrocarbon Agency (AZU) achieved a 100% success rate in geothermal exploration across all four planned sites, confirming significant underground potential. Notably, research in Zaprešić identified a reservoir at depths over 1,600 meters with temperatures exceeding 95 degrees Celsius.
In Velika Gorica, temperatures over 100 degrees Celsius could meet nearly 60% of local heating needs, while Osijek reported similar findings with a capacity of nearly 5 MW. The geothermal projects, part of a EUR 50.8 million initiative from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, aim to bolster Croatia's energy independence. Currently, the country lacks active geothermal power plants, with the Velika 1 plant inactive for three years.
