Cyanide Detected in Bottles from Chinese Vessels Near Ayungin Shoal
Cyanide was identified in bottles from Chinese fishing boats near Ayungin Shoal, raising concerns about environmental sabotage and international law violations.

Laboratory tests confirmed the presence of cyanide in bottles seized by the Philippine Navy from Chinese boats near Ayungin Shoal in February and October 2025. The National Security Council (NSC) indicated that this could threaten local marine ecosystems and impact Filipino military personnel stationed on the BRP Sierra Madre.
The NSC urged the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine Coast Guard to enhance surveillance in the area. Intentional use of cyanide might constitute a breach of international law, as it poses risks to both local fisheries and the structural integrity of the military outpost. This situation could lead to further diplomatic tensions with China.
