The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched a significant initiative inviting domestic companies to submit proposals for the construction and operation of AI data centers at the Idaho National Laboratory (INL).

This strategic move, encompassing approximately 44,000 acres, aims to bolster the nation's standing in the global AI landscape while simultaneously promoting the deployment of innovative energy technologies. By leveraging federal land, the DOE seeks to catalyze private investment and expand the U.S. computing capacity in AI.

Acting Assistant Secretary for Nuclear Energy Mike Goff emphasized that winning the global AI race is essential for enhancing the quality of life for all Americans. The current solicitation, part of a broader strategy initiated during the Trump administration, targets the rapid development of infrastructure essential for scientific research. This research has the potential to address some of the world's most pressing challenges.

The DOE has identified priority for proposals that integrate AI data centers with cutting-edge energy generation and storage solutions, such as advanced nuclear reactors and enhanced geothermal systems. Each applicant will bear responsibility for the construction, operation, and eventual decommissioning of their projects, alongside securing necessary utility interconnection agreements for any new power generation facilities.

Proposals will be assessed based on their technological readiness, financial strength, and comprehensive regulatory planning, including strategies for navigating permitting processes. The first round of applications is set to close on November 7, with additional submissions accepted on a rolling basis.

In addition to INL, the DOE has pinpointed three other federal sites—Oak Ridge Reservation, Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant, and Savannah River Site—for potential AI infrastructure developments. This initiative is not only a step towards enhancing national AI capabilities but also demonstrates a commitment to sustainable energy practices, ensuring that the evolving demands of technology are met with reliable and innovative power sources.
