Dexter Seeks Annexation of 45 Acres Amid Resistance from Scio Township
Dexter is pursuing the annexation of 45 acres from Scio Township for a housing development and potential municipal water supply. Scio Township officials have raised concerns over environmental impacts and land preservation priorities, complicating the approval process.

Dexter aims to annex 45 acres from Scio Township for a housing project, which could include up to 119 homes and a new municipal water supply. Despite city support, Scio Township officials have expressed concerns about the impact of a municipal well on local residents and the preservation of open space, having previously declared that annexation does not align with township goals.
A development agreement with Baker Road Land Holding LLC allows for future housing proposals but requires city approvals. Environmental assessments indicate the site’s aquifer could support a well pumping 800 gallons per minute, although filtration for iron and arsenic would be necessary.
The project timeline suggests well construction may not start for six to seven years, and Lutton has committed $1 million for municipal supply facilities. Potential risks include community pushback and environmental concerns impacting the annexation process.
