DHL Partners with Vela for Decarbonized Transatlantic Shipping by 2027
DHL Global Forwarding France has partnered with Vela to utilize a wind-powered trimaran for transatlantic freight by 2027. This initiative aims to offer a carbon-neutral shipping option between France and the U.S., addressing growing demand for sustainable logistics solutions.

DHL Global Forwarding France has signed an agreement with Vela to secure transport capacity on a wind-powered trimaran, targeting a decarbonized transatlantic route by 2027. The 67-meter vessel, designed with input from record-setting sailor François Gabart, utilizes wind propulsion, with a conventional engine for port maneuvers.
The trimaran will have a capacity of 415 metric tons per crossing and is equipped with solar panels and hydrogen generators. Vela plans to build a fleet of five vessels by 2028, allowing for weekly service across the Atlantic. This service could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 99% compared to air freight and 90% compared to traditional container ships, appealing to companies like Takeda Pharmaceutical and Greentech looking for sustainable logistics options.
