Discovery of Natural Hydrogen in Mali's Ntekedo Enhances Energy Potential
The discovery of natural hydrogen in Ntekedo, near Bourakébougou, marks a significant step in Mali's energy sector. This resource positions Mali as a leader in the global transition to sustainable energy, attracting international interest and investment.

On March 17, 2026, a water well in Ntekedo revealed natural hydrogen, extending the known deposits from Bourakébougou, discovered in 1987. The geological assessments by Chapman Petroleum Engineering confirmed substantial reserves, estimating over 670 billion cubic meters of exploitable hydrogen.
Following the establishment of a hydrogen fuel cell in 2022, Mali is positioned to capitalize on this unique energy source, potentially reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels. However, challenges remain regarding extraction methods, process refinement, and the need for significant investment in infrastructure. The potential for natural hydrogen could transform Mali's energy landscape and contribute to its sustainable development goals.
