DP World Introduces Hybrid Crane Retrofit at Prince Rupert Terminal
DP World has implemented a hybrid retrofit for a rubber-tired gantry crane at its Prince Rupert terminal, achieving a 60% reduction in fuel consumption and eliminating approximately 100 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to modernize equipment and reduce emissions across their Canadian operations.

DP World's first hybrid RTG crane retrofit at the Prince Rupert terminal has successfully reduced fuel consumption by over 60% compared to conventional models. The upgrade, developed with ZPMC North America, replaces the existing diesel engine with an 80 kW generator that charges onboard batteries and captures energy during operations, leading to improved efficiency and reduced maintenance costs.
Currently, Prince Rupert operates six RTGs, with plans for additional retrofits as part of a decarbonization strategy. The company is also exploring hydrogen-powered RTG technology in Vancouver, indicating a commitment to alternative fuel solutions in cargo handling.
