Dresden to Establish River Water Treatment Plant for Semiconductor Sector by 2030
Dresden's semiconductor industry will utilize a new river water treatment facility starting in 2030, with an investment of over 300 million euros. The project aims to enhance local infrastructure and support industry growth by ensuring the availability of industrial water while conserving drinking water resources.

Dresden plans to initiate the construction of a river water treatment plant by 2030, with an investment surpassing 300 million euros, supported by 100 million euros from the State of Saxony and 50 million euros from the City of Dresden. Designed to supply up to 67,000 cubic meters of water daily, the facility will service chip manufacturers via two underground pipelines.
The majority of the used water will be returned to the Elbe, ensuring sustainability. The project aims to decouple industrial and drinking water systems, enhancing security of supply for the semiconductor sector.
Additionally, a capacity expansion at Hosterwitz waterworks is underway to meet immediate industrial demands. The initiative is attracting interest from other European regions, positioning it as a potential model for similar projects.
