Egypt Expands Al Gabal Al Asfar Wastewater Treatment Plant Capacity to 3.5 Million Cubic Meters Daily

The Al Gabal Al Asfar Wastewater Treatment Plant, located near Greater Cairo, is set for an expansion that will increase its treatment capacity to 3.5 million cubic meters daily. Currently, the facility processes 2.5 million cubic meters per day, with its first two phases completed, and the third phase planned to add one million cubic meters.
This plant plays a significant role in Egypt's resource recovery strategy, converting wastewater into water and energy, with around 70% of its electricity generated from biogas derived from treated sludge. The project is pivotal for environmental protection and aligns with Egypt's sustainable development goals, emphasizing the transformation of wastewater into a valuable resource. The focus on such infrastructure enhances resilience against freshwater shortages, essential amid rising population pressures and climate change.
