Environmental Order Issued for Contamination at Edmonton Chemical Plant
Alberta Environment has mandated remediation for the Enerkem Alberta Biofuels facility due to significant chemical contamination. The order arises from failures to properly decommission the site post-closure, raising concerns about environmental safety and public health.

An environmental enforcement order has been issued against the Enerkem Alberta Biofuels facility in Edmonton, necessitating immediate remediation due to extensive soil and groundwater contamination. The plant, which converted municipal waste into biofuels, ceased operations in January 2024 following financial turmoil and is now in insolvency proceedings under Deloitte Restructuring.
Regulatory investigations revealed toxic substances, including methanol and petroleum hydrocarbons, present on-site, exceeding safety guidelines. Alberta Environment has mandated that Enerkem submit a formal remediation plan by January 2027. The ongoing contamination poses risks to public health and the environment, with local officials emphasizing the need for stringent oversight of industrial operations to prevent future liabilities.
