ERCOT Joins GO15 as US Department of Energy Launches $1.9 Billion SPARK Initiative for Grid Capacity Expansion
GO15 welcomes ERCOT as a new member, enhancing collaboration on power grid management. Concurrently, the US Department of Energy initiates a $1.9 billion program, SPARK, to upgrade existing transmission lines and boost grid capacity by replacing wires with higher-capacity conductors. This initiative aims to meet rising electricity demand and improve reliability while avoiding the lengthy process of constructing new lines. Project applications are due by May 19, 2026.

GO15 has added ERCOT, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, as its new member, leveraging their expertise in managing Texas's power supply. Simultaneously, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has launched a $1.9 billion initiative named SPARK to enhance the nation's power grid capacity.
This program focuses on reconductoring existing transmission lines to replace them with higher-capacity conductors, facilitating rapid upgrades without the delays of new constructions. Concept papers for funding are due by April 1, and full applications are due by May 19, 2026, with project selections announced in summer 2026. The SPARK initiative aims to address the rising electricity demand in the U.S. and improve grid reliability.
