EU Adopts Gas and Hydrogen Market Package to Enhance Renewable Energy Framework
The European Council approved the 'Hydrogen and decarbonised gas market package' on May 21, 2024, to reform EU gas regulations. This package aims to facilitate the deployment of renewable and low-carbon gases, particularly hydrogen, with significant implications for the gas market structure in the EU.

On May 21, 2024, the European Council adopted the 'Hydrogen and decarbonised gas market package,' reforming the EU's regulatory framework for renewable and low-carbon gases. The package, which includes updates to the 2009 gas regulation and directive, will be published in the Official Journal of the European Union and take effect 20 days post-publication.
Member States will have six months to implement the Gas Regulation and two years for the Gas Directive. The legislation covers renewable gas, including biogas and renewable hydrogen, and low-carbon gas that meets specific greenhouse gas emission reduction thresholds.
It also outlines consumer rights and obligations for Member States to ensure market transparency. This initiative, aligned with the European Green Deal, is essential for advancing the EU's energy transition strategy.
