EU Discusses Sustainable Fuel Strategies Amid Regulatory Challenges
The European Parliament is prioritizing the role of intermediate crops in achieving sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) targets. As aviation fuel consumption is projected to double by 2050, the EU requires a robust domestic supply of sustainable feedstock to meet its SAF mandates.

The European Parliament convened to address the potential of intermediate crops in fulfilling EU sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) mandates, which require 6% SAF in fuel supplied at airports by 2030, increasing to 70% by 2050. By 2035, Europe will need approximately 7 million tons of SAF, necessitating over 9 million tons of oil feedstock.
Policymakers emphasized that clear definitions and regulations are essential to encourage investment and facilitate the adoption of intermediate crops, which do not compete with food production. These crops can enhance soil health and provide farmers with additional income.
However, inconsistent rules across member states could hinder progress and innovation. The EU's approach to trade and regulatory barriers was also discussed, with a focus on the impact on relationships with partners like India, amid shifting geopolitical dynamics.
