European Coalition Advocates for Next-Generation Geothermal Energy Deployment
A coalition of nearly 70 organizations urges Europe to prioritize next-generation geothermal energy, highlighting its potential to generate 301 terawatt-hours annually. The upcoming Geothermal Action Plan is seen as a crucial opportunity to enhance energy security and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

A coalition comprising 70 businesses, investors, and civil society organizations is urging European leaders to prioritize next-generation geothermal energy technologies. The group emphasizes that these technologies could generate up to 301 terawatt-hours annually in the EU, equating to 42% of coal- and gas-fired generation.
They also estimate geothermal's potential could reach nearly 40 terawatts, which is about 35 times the current installed electricity capacity. The coalition warns that the forthcoming Geothermal Action Plan, set for release in May, may not adequately recognize geothermal energy as a significant source of reliable electricity and industrial heat. Effective measures are needed to overcome investment barriers and accelerate deployment to prevent Europe from missing out on this vital energy source.
