EXMAR Completes Successful Ship-to-Ship Transfer of Ammonia in Oman
EXMAR has successfully executed a ship-to-ship transfer of ammonia in Sohar, Oman, enhancing its operational capabilities. This transfer supports the introduction of new vessels equipped with dual-fuel ammonia engines, marking a significant step towards ammonia as a shipping fuel following regulatory changes.

In January, EXMAR completed a full cargo transfer of ammonia between its 38,500m³ vessel KORTRIJK and a Trammo vessel at Sohar port, Oman. This operation facilitates the upcoming deployment of four new 46,000m³ mid-sized gas carriers featuring WinGD dual-fuel ammonia engines, with the first vessel set for delivery from South Korea.
Furthermore, this ammonia transfer is vital as it aligns with new interim guidelines developed by EXMAR and Lloyd’s Register for the safe use of ammonia as fuel, following the 2024 IMO approval for toxic cargoes. The industry may see increased adoption of ammonia-fueled vessels, which could influence shipping regulations and operational safety standards significantly.
