Expansion of Green Hydrogen Projects in Latin America and Europe
Latin America is advancing in green hydrogen initiatives, with key projects in Chile, Uruguay, and Mexico. Europe's focus on low-carbon steel production may impact import strategies and emissions in the industry.

Latin America is witnessing significant green hydrogen initiatives, with AES Gener planning a facility in Chile requiring 850 MW of renewable energy. Uruguay is preparing a government tender for a pilot hydrogen project focused on sustainable mobility, while Mexico is evaluating a PV project to support a 75 MW hydrogen plant.
In Brazil, GEP Global and Vale are working on establishing a green iron supply chain for Europe through the Hydrogen Decarbonisation Alliance for Steel (Hydeas), although the project's scale and investment timeline are not yet defined. In Europe, strategies for importing direct reduced iron (DRI) versus hydrogen are being assessed, which may influence costs and control in the steel industry. The transition to low-carbon steel production is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions in manufacturing.
