F2 Chemicals Secures Approval for Hazardous Substance Storage in Lancashire
F2 Chemicals Ltd has received consent from Fylde Council to store 270 tonnes of hazardous materials, including 60 tonnes of hydrogen fluoride, at its facility near Preston. The decision, finalized on March 24, consolidates previous approvals and ensures compliance with safety regulations.

F2 Chemicals Ltd has been granted permission to store up to 270 tonnes of hazardous substances, including 60 tonnes of hydrogen fluoride, at its site in Lea Town, Lancashire. The decision, made by Fylde Council on March 24, replaces three prior consents from 2002 and is backed by risk assessments from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which determined that risks to the community are minimal.
The application covers eleven categories of substances, with storage in designated tanks across the 3.9-hectare site adjacent to the Springfields Westinghouse nuclear complex. Despite public concerns about potential risks, including chemical leaks and explosions, no objections were raised by consulted agencies, including the Environment Agency and the Office for Nuclear Regulation. A condition has been imposed to adhere to specified storage limits and the possibility of needing to adjust the environmental permit for increased hydrogen fluoride storage remains.
