Federal Funding of $108.7 Million for WWII Bridge Replacements in Alaska
The U.S. government has allocated $108.7 million for the replacement of two bridges on the Richardson Highway in Alaska. This funding marks the first major project under a new federal program designated for substantial bridge replacements.

The replacement of the Johnson River and Gerstle River bridges will commence in 2027 and 2029, respectively. Originally built by the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, these structures have surpassed their 50-year service life by over 30 years.
This initiative highlights the critical need for updated infrastructure that supports freight movement, recreational activities, and daily commutes in Interior Alaska. Successful completion of these projects may enhance regional economic growth and attract further investments.
