Federal Funding Secured for WWII Bridge Replacements in Alaska
The U.S. government has allocated $108.7 million for the replacement of two WWII-era bridges in Alaska, enhancing vital infrastructure.

The federal government allocated $108.7 million for replacing the Johnson River and Gerstle River bridges on the Richardson Highway in Alaska. The Johnson River bridge replacement is set to begin in 2027, followed by the Gerstle River bridge project in 2029.
Both bridges, constructed by the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II, have exceeded their intended service life of 50 years by over 30 years. This initiative is the first significant bridge project funded under a federal program aimed at major bridge replacements, underscoring the importance of reliable infrastructure for freight, recreation, and daily commutes in the region. The upgrades are expected to bolster long-term investment and growth in Interior Alaska.
