FirstEnergy Initiates 1,200-Megawatt Gas Plant in Monongalia County
FirstEnergy is developing a 1,200-megawatt natural gas combined cycle plant in Monongalia County, set for completion by 2031. This project aims to meet rising electricity demands, with potential large-scale contracts from unidentified companies requiring up to 1,000 megawatts of additional capacity.

FirstEnergy's new 1,200-megawatt natural gas combined cycle power plant is set to be operational in 2031 as part of its 10-year Integrated Resource Plan. The facility will be located at the existing Fort Martin Power Station site after reviewing 28 potential locations.
The project is expected to create over 2,200 jobs and generate more than $85 million in state and local tax revenue, employing union labor during construction. The utility is responding to increasing requests for electricity generation capacity, with future demands projected to range between 600 megawatts and 1,000 megawatts. The necessary permitting process involves approximately 300 federal, state, and local approvals, with the timeline for equipment procurement extended to five years due to global supply chain challenges.
