KeyState Energy Proposes Fertilizer Facility in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania

KeyState Energy plans to establish a nitrogen fertilizer production facility in Karthaus, Clearfield County, with an annual capacity of 1 million tons. The project, dubbed KeyState to Zero, will utilize natural gas from Clinton County and is anticipated to contribute $1.3 billion to Pennsylvania's economy, with construction expected to take about two and a half years, potentially completing by 2031.
Environmental concerns have been raised regarding air quality, water resources, and carbon storage, necessitating thorough scrutiny. The facility aims to alleviate reliance on international nitrogen supplies, particularly from Russia, amidst rising fertilizer costs, which have soared from approximately $350 to over $1,000 per ton.
