Funding Secured for Hekinan and Tomakomai Ammonia Import Hubs in Japan
Japan's METI has approved funding for ammonia import hubs in Hekinan and Tomakomai, enhancing low-carbon ammonia supply chains. This initiative aligns with the Hydrogen Society Promotion Act, fostering infrastructure development for the energy sector.

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) has officially approved funding for two ammonia import hubs: one in Hekinan and another in Tomakomai. JERA is designated as the supplier for the Hekinan hub, which will primarily support co-firing at its power plant, while also servicing regional industrial customers like Chubu Electric Power.
The Tomakomai hub, set for development by 2030, involves a consortium including Mitsui & Co. and IHI, which has received contracts-for-difference funding for importing 280,000 tons of low-carbon ammonia annually. Both projects aim to establish robust supply chains for low-carbon energy, highlighting Japan's commitment to sustainable energy solutions. The growth of these hubs may influence regional energy dynamics and accelerate Japan's transition to a hydrogen economy.
