Gas Networks Ireland Launches €200 Million Decarbonisation Initiative
Gas Networks Ireland is implementing a €200 million project to reduce operational greenhouse gas emissions by 42%. The initiative targets compressor stations in Scotland and aims to install Electric Motor Drives to enhance energy efficiency and lower emissions.

Gas Networks Ireland is advancing a decarbonisation project with a budget of €200 million, aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 42%. This project focuses on two compressor stations located at Beattock and Brighouse Bay in Scotland, where Electric Motor Drives (EMDs) will be introduced.
The EMDs, which utilize electricity instead of gas, will not only enhance energy efficiency but also significantly cut on-site combustion emissions. The initiative is aligned with Ireland's goal of reducing emissions by 51% by 2030 and is projected to lower operational network emissions by approximately 87,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually. With 14,758 km of gas network in Ireland, this project is critical for improving the sustainability of gas supply infrastructure.
