Geothermal Power Plant Project Faces Legal and Environmental Challenges in Turkey
The geothermal power plant project in Kanireş raises significant environmental concerns, prompting local protests and a lawsuit. Experts warn of potential damage to ecosystems, water resources, and increased seismic activity.

The geothermal project by IGNIS H2 in Kanireş, covering three villages, has received a license for 7,132 hectares. Local residents oppose the project, citing risks of migration, landslides, and pollution of water resources.
An expert report from Dr. Eşref Atabey highlights potential harm to local ecosystems and warns against the project's claims of local employment benefits. A lawsuit has been filed at the Bingöl Administrative Court seeking to annul the project's license and Environmental Impact Assessment approval.
The report emphasizes that groundwater could be contaminated and questions the feasibility of finding high-enthalpy geothermal resources in the area. Increased seismic activity from drilling operations poses additional risks to the region’s stability.
