Germany's Green Hydrogen Regulations Criticized by Transport & Environment
New regulations in Germany mandate that road fuel must contain Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBO), primarily green hydrogen, starting at 0.1% and escalating to 10% by 2040. Critics, including Transport & Environment, warn of rising fuel prices and the potential for key industries to face hydrogen shortages.
Germany's federal council has approved regulations requiring a gradual increase in RFNBO fuels in road transport, starting at 0.1% and reaching 10% by 2040. Critics argue this will inflate fuel prices significantly, with estimates suggesting costs could rise by up to 80%.
The demand for RFNBO fuels could reach 50 petajoules by 2040, exceeding the total energy needs of Germany's shipping sector. Meanwhile, Hydrogen Europe supports the regulations, asserting they will stimulate green hydrogen production investment. However, the limited and expensive production of green hydrogen and electrofuels raises concerns about competition among transport sectors for these resources, particularly with the aviation industry facing similar fuel requirements.
