Global Engagement Center's Disinformation Tactics Targeting Domestic Media Exposed
The Global Engagement Center, funded by the U.S. government, engaged in testing technologies aimed at domestic media narratives, particularly targeting Blaze Media. This raises significant concerns regarding governmental censorship and the implications for free speech in the U.S.

The Global Engagement Center, established under the Obama administration and codified in the 2017 National Defense Authorization Act, was involved in promoting technologies for narrative tracking and censorship, particularly targeting domestic media. It received over $2 million in grants to fund tests conducted by PeakMetrics, NewsGuard, and Omelas, which included tracking narratives relevant to U.S. elections and potentially censoring content from outlets like Blaze Media.
The center was nominally closed in January 2025 and formally dismantled in April 2025 by the Trump administration. This raises concerns about the impact of government involvement in media monitoring on First Amendment rights and the potential for misuse of disinformation strategies against domestic entities.
