Global SAF Production Remains Low Despite Industry Push
IATA forecasts global Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production to reach 2.4 million tonnes by 2026, accounting for only 0.8% of aviation fuel use. The aviation sector faces challenges in scaling up SAF production, with calls for coordinated actions to enhance renewable energy supply, fuel infrastructure access, and supportive policies.

Global production of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is projected to hit approximately 2.4 million tonnes by 2026, representing merely 0.8% of total aviation fuel consumption, with costs reaching $4.3 billion for airlines. IATA emphasizes the necessity for expanded renewable energy supply, open access to fuel infrastructure, and robust policy support to achieve significant SAF production volumes.
Currently, the only operational e-SAF production site is insufficient to meet future mandates, with a significant gap in required commercial-scale refineries. Furthermore, recent passenger surveys indicate strong support for decarbonization, with 89% advocating for continued emissions reduction efforts, suggesting that airline sustainability measures could influence consumer choices and demand.
