GMB Scotland Advocates for Direct MoD Contract to Navantia Shipyard for Royal Navy Docks
The GMB union is urging UK Government to assign the Euston contract to the Navantia shipyard in Methil, Scotland, aiming to enhance domestic shipbuilding capability and secure jobs. This initiative is positioned to support the UK's submarine fleet maintenance needs into the early 2030s.

GMB Scotland is advocating for the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to award the Programme Euston contract directly to Navantia's Methil yard, emphasizing its potential to revitalize the shipyard and strengthen UK industrial capacity. The project, which involves constructing floating dry docks at HM Naval Base Clyde, is projected to significantly enhance maintenance capacity for the UK's nuclear submarine fleet.
The MoD anticipates releasing a Programme Business Case by mid-2026, with a contract award expected thereafter. GMB argues that prioritizing domestic shipyards can foster job creation and secure supply chains, particularly as workforce numbers at the Methil site have increased from 180 to 230, with plans for further growth. This contract is seen as a critical opportunity to bolster the Scottish economy and support long-term defense capabilities.
