Goa Village Launches Biogas Plant to Convert Cow Dung into Cooking Gas
A biogas facility in North Goa processes 5,000 kg of cow dung daily to produce 130 cubic metres of cooking gas. This initiative aims to provide a sustainable energy solution amid rising fuel security concerns.

The biogas plant in Mayem, Goa, processes approximately five tonnes of cow dung each day, generating enough biogas to meet the cooking needs of 80 to 100 households. Established by the Department of Panchayati Raj under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Gramin), the project is part of the GOBARdhan Initiative, focusing on converting biodegradable waste into clean energy.
The facility has a total estimated cost of ₹1.97 crore and is the first of its kind in Goa, serving around 15 families currently. The model is viewed as a potential blueprint for decentralized energy and waste management across other regions, especially with escalating energy prices.
