Google Proposes Large Data Center Amid County Moratorium Consideration
Carlton County is considering a moratorium on data center construction as Google hosts an open house for its proposed Hermantown facility. The project, spanning 1.2 million square feet, has raised environmental concerns among local residents and officials.

Google's proposed data center in Hermantown, Minnesota, is set to cover 1.2 million square feet and could generate over $800,000 annually in commercial taxes once operational. The county is deliberating on a moratorium regarding new data center constructions, with discussions scheduled for July 7.
Concerns from residents include environmental impacts, energy consumption, and lack of transparency regarding sustainability claims. Google asserts that the facility will operate on clean energy and utilize minimal water through air-cooled systems.
However, skepticism remains among residents and environmental advocates about the project's true costs and benefits. The construction phase could create 1,500 to 2,000 jobs, contributing economically to the region.
