Grant, Chelan, and Douglas PUDs Propose Geothermal Energy Study Amid Energy Shortfall Concerns
Grant, Chelan, and Douglas PUDs are exploring a joint geothermal study to address potential electricity shortages in North Central Washington. The collaboration aims to investigate the region's geothermal potential with a shared investment of $22 million.

Grant PUD is considering a partnership with Chelan and Douglas PUDs to assess geothermal energy as a solution to rising electricity demand. Each utility would contribute equally to the estimated $22 million study.
A report indicates Washington and Oregon could face a 5-gigawatt shortfall by 2030, escalating to 9 gigawatts in the Northwest, including Idaho and Montana. The study will involve geophysical surveys and subsurface research to evaluate geothermal potential.
If approved, permits will be sought from state agencies with data collection planned for summer. The collaboration may enhance energy reliability and affordability for the region.
