Greater Chennai Corporation Launches ₹7,200 Crore Climate Budget to Combat Emissions and Flooding
The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has unveiled its first Climate Budget, allocating ₹7,200.53 crore to address projected greenhouse gas emissions of 55.08 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent by 2050. For FY 2025-26, ₹1,341.2 crore is earmarked for climate-related initiatives.
The budget focuses on urban flooding, waste management, and aims for carbon neutrality by 2050, including a 100% renewable power grid and complete electrification of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus fleet. Significant projects include constructing 1,168 km of storm-water drains and biomining legacy waste at dumpyards. The restoration of Kadapakkam Lake and rainwater harvesting systems are also part of the plan.
