Gridworks and Uganda Government Sign Key Agreements for Amari Power Transmission Project

POWER GRIDS & TRANSMISSION

Gridworks and the Ugandan government announced on February 4 the signing of two agreements to commence the Amari Power Transmission project. The project, estimated at $50 million, will enhance capacity at four high-voltage substations: Tororo (220 kV), Nkenda (132 kV), Mbarara North (132 kV), and Mbarara South (220 kV).

It aims to improve power supply for industrial users, reduce losses, and integrate renewable energy. This is the first privately sponsored power transmission project in Africa to enter construction. The International Energy Agency reports a need for private financing in African power grids due to high public debt and financial constraints on state-owned utilities.
