Gruber Logistics and Scania Launch Hydrogen Truck Trials in Italy
Beginning May 2026, Gruber Logistics will trial a Scania 40 R FCEV hydrogen-electric truck in real transport conditions. This initiative under the European Zefes project aims to advance the decarbonisation of freight transport through practical operational trials.

Gruber Logistics is set to commence trials of the Scania 40 R FCEV, a hydrogen-electric heavy goods vehicle, in May 2026. This testing, part of the European Zefes project, aims to collect data on operational performance, including range and refuelling times, while collaborating with partners like Nestlé and P&G.
The vehicle can achieve a range of up to 1,000 kilometres with a full hydrogen tank and integrated battery. The trials will also assess the practicality of hydrogen infrastructure and operational costs.
As hydrogen technology for heavy vehicles is still nascent, this project seeks to transition from theoretical assessments to real-world applications, with public presentations planned at Transpotec 2026 and the Gruber Logistics Innovation Summit. The outcomes may influence future logistics strategies regarding sustainable transport.
