Hamburg Port to Become Key European Hub for Green Ammonia Import
Hamburg Port aims to become Germany's leading hub for green shipping fuels, focusing on ammonia and methanol imports. MB Energy plans to build an ammonia import terminal with a deep-water berth in Wilhelmsburg to ensure supply for European customers.
The New Energy Gate project at Blumensand will import and distribute ammonia, methanol, and hydrogen, currently in the approval phase. The terminal will have a capacity of 80,000 cubic meters and an annual throughput of approximately one million tons of ammonia, with projected costs of 500 million euros.
HPA-CEO Jens Meier and MB Energy's Volker Ebeling recently visited Gulf Coast Ammonia's facility in Texas City, which will be the world's largest ammonia synthesis plant, producing 1.3 million tons of green ammonia annually. The Texas facility aims to enhance domestic and global nitrogen-based fertilizer supply and improve crop yields. The new plant will utilize advanced technology for safe and efficient ammonia production and storage, with operations expected to begin in 2028.
