Hamilton Completes $390.4M Birch Transit Centre for CNG and Future Electric Buses
The Birch Transit Centre in Hamilton, costing $390.4 million, supports the largest CNG bus fleet in Ontario while preparing for future battery-electric buses. This facility integrates advanced design to accommodate the transition to zero-emission vehicles.

The Birch Transit Centre, completed at a cost of $390.4 million, supports Hamilton's compressed natural gas (CNG) bus fleet and is designed for future battery-electric buses. Covering 24 acres, the facility features a 400,000-square-foot structure with bus storage, maintenance bays, and CNG fuelling capabilities.
Key design elements include methane gas detection and provisions for future charging infrastructure, including a substation and structural support for pantograph systems. The project received $142.8 million in federal funding, $92.6 million from Ontario, and $155 million from the City of Hamilton. Extensive pre-enabling works contributed to a lengthy development period, which could be shortened with better funding processes.
