HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Launches First Ammonia-Fueled Ships
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has completed two ammonia-fueled vessels, a first in global shipbuilding, set for delivery to Exmar by July. The shift to ammonia as marine fuel is projected to reach 8% by 2030, rising to 46% by 2050, highlighting the industry's transition to eco-friendly solutions.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has constructed two ammonia dual-fuel gas carriers, marking the first such vessels in the shipbuilding sector. Scheduled for delivery to Belgium-based Exmar and Exmar LPG France by July, this development underscores the increasing significance of ammonia in marine fuel, projected to account for 8% of the market by 2030 and 46% by 2050, according to the IEA.
The company has also secured orders for a total of eight ammonia-fueled vessels from Exmar and Trafigura. With previous advancements in methanol-fueled carriers, HD Hyundai is positioning itself as a leader in eco-friendly shipbuilding.
