Hitachi to Supply SF6-Free 550 kV Gas-Insulated Switchgear to Chubu Electric Power Grid
Hitachi, Ltd. has received an order from Chubu Electric Power Grid for the world's first 550 kV SF6-free gas-insulated switchgear, part of its EconiQ technology. This project aims to reduce CO2-equivalent emissions by 99% compared to traditional SF6-insulated equipment. The initiative supports Japan's transition to a sustainable power grid amidst rising electricity demand and regulatory pressures on SF6 usage.

Hitachi, Ltd. will deliver the world's first 550 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) that is completely SF6-free to Chubu Electric Power Grid. This EconiQ technology significantly reduces CO2-equivalent emissions by 99% compared to conventional SF6-insulated GIS.
The adoption aligns with Chubu's 2024 policy to implement SF6-free equipment for various voltage classes, addressing both grid reliability and greenhouse gas reduction amidst increasing electricity demand in Japan. Hitachi Energy introduced its EconiQ high-voltage portfolio in 2021, focusing on eco-efficient alternatives to SF6.
