HS Orka Reports Geothermal System Renewal Amid Eruptions at Svartsengi Power Plant
HS Orka's Managing Director Lilja Magnúsdóttir highlights the renewal of the geothermal system at Svartsengi due to magma intrusions. Despite challenges from seismic and volcanic activity, preparations for remote operation and personnel evacuation were implemented. Plans for a seventh power unit were approved in October 2022, with construction starting summer 2023. Eruptions occurred in the area, yet operations continued, culminating in the plant's activation in December 2025.

HS Orka's Managing Director, Lilja Magnúsdóttir, stated that the geothermal system at Svartsengi is renewing due to magma intrusions, despite increased seismic and volcanic activity. Preparations for potential eruptions included remote operation capabilities and personnel evacuation plans.
The construction of a seventh power unit was approved in October 2022, with groundwork starting in summer 2023. Following multiple eruptions in the Fagradalsfjall area, operations continued, and the facility was powered up in December 2025, with interruptions only for evacuations due to eruptions and gas pollution.
