Hydro One and First Nations Collaborate on Greater Sudbury Power Grid Enhancements
Hydro One has signed a co-operation agreement with eight First Nations for two new transmission lines connecting Greater Sudbury to Sault Ste. Marie. The North Shore Link is a 105-kilometre 230 kV line, while the Northeast Power Line spans 200 kilometres at 500 kV. An additional 500 kV line from Barrie to Hanmer is also being fast-tracked, expected to be operational by 2032, enhancing power flow to Northern Ontario amidst rising energy demands.

Hydro One has made progress on three power lines to improve Greater Sudbury's connections to Ontario's power grid. A co-operation agreement was signed with eight First Nations for two transmission lines: the North Shore Link (105 km, 230 kV) and the Northeast Power Line (200 km, 500 kV).
The Barrie to Hanmer line (500 kV, 270 km) has also been fast-tracked for completion by 2032, aiming to deliver up to 1,500 megawatts to the north. These projects, with investments from First Nations, are expected to enhance regional power supply and support future energy demands due to anticipated mine openings and industrial growth in Northern Ontario.
