Hyundai E&C to Construct Liquid Hydrogen Storage Tanks in $19.2 Million Project
Hyundai E&C will develop liquid hydrogen storage tanks in a KRW 29 billion project funded by the South Korean government, set to conclude in December 2029. This initiative aims to enhance South Korea's capacity for importing clean hydrogen, crucial for decarbonization efforts in the power and mobility sectors.

Hyundai E&C has been awarded a project worth KRW 29 billion ($19.2 million) to develop liquid hydrogen (LH2) storage tanks, scheduled for completion by December 2029. The project will include designing and constructing demonstration tanks with a capacity of 200m3, with potential future expansions to 50,000m3 tanks.
These flat-bottomed, cylindrical storage systems will facilitate the storage, transfer, and unloading of LH2. The findings will assist South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MOLIT) in developing safety standards and reducing LH2 boil-off gas. The project supports South Korea's goal of increasing clean hydrogen imports but highlights challenges in cryogenic logistics and required advanced insulation to minimize losses.
