IATA AGM Highlights Asia Pacific Aviation's Growth and Productivity Challenges
Asia Pacific aviation is set for unprecedented expansion, adding 2.4 billion passengers by 2040, representing 41% of global growth. However, despite significant investments, productivity issues and congestion are forecasted to worsen, indicating that mere capacity growth will not suffice.

Asia Pacific's aviation sector is projected to increase by 2.4 billion passengers in the next two decades, contributing to 41% of global aviation growth. While airports are investing heavily, congestion is expected to rise to 88% by 2040, highlighting a productivity crisis amidst this expansion.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production is lagging, with only 0.8% of aviation fuel use in 2026, despite significant investment needs. IATA calls for coordinated efforts to enhance SAF production, improve policy frameworks, and establish a global SAF market. Additionally, a recent IATA survey indicates that 89% of passengers support emission reductions, with many willing to pay more for sustainable flying.
