India Advances Biofuel Strategy with Record Ethanol Blending Targets
India's Petroleum Ministry reports significant progress in biofuel production, with ethanol blending exceeding 1,000 crore liters in 2024-25. New amendments to the National Policy on Biofuels aim to enhance domestic feedstock use and promote environmental sustainability.

The Indian government has achieved a historic ethanol blending target of over 1,000 crore liters for the year ending 2025. Public Sector Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) are set to begin a 20% ethanol blending with petrol by November 2025.
The amended National Policy on Biofuels now includes diverse feedstocks, such as damaged food grains and agricultural residues, contributing to reduced crude oil imports and CO2 emissions. Since 2014-15, the Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme has led to a reduction of approximately 869 lakh metric tonnes of CO2.
Moreover, the Government aims for a 5% biodiesel blending target by 2030, supported by various fiscal incentives and the Pradhan Mantri JI-VAN Yojana. The policy's expansion to advanced biofuels is expected to bolster energy security and create jobs.
