India Hosts 7% of Global Semiconductor Design Centres and 20% of Workforce, Government Reports
India's semiconductor sector now represents approximately 7% of the world's semiconductor-focused Global Capability Centres and employs nearly 20% of the global semiconductor chip design workforce. The Semicon India Programme has attracted investments of around ₹1.6 lakh crore, with ten manufacturing units approved, including two fabrication plants. The government has also launched India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 to enhance design capabilities and supply chain. Academic institutions are engaged in chip design, with significant hours logged using advanced EDA tools.

India is home to about 7% of the world's semiconductor Global Capability Centres and employs nearly 20% of the global semiconductor chip design workforce, according to Minister of State for Electronics and IT Jitin Prasada. The Semicon India Programme has drawn investment commitments of approximately ₹1.6 lakh crore in three years, resulting in the approval of ten semiconductor manufacturing units, including two fabrication plants.
The programme aims to enhance domestic semiconductor manufacturing capacity and has achieved milestones with one unit in commercial production and others in pilot runs. The government has also initiated the India Semiconductor Mission 2.0 to support design capabilities and supply chain improvements. Academic institutions are actively participating, with 315 universities utilizing advanced EDA tools, contributing to the design and fabrication of chips.
