India Launches First Indigenous 64-Bit Microprocessor Dhruv64
India launched its first indigenous 64-bit microprocessor, Dhruv64, on December 15, 2025. Developed by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing under the Digital India RISC-V Initiative, the 1.0 GHz dual-core processor utilizes open-source RISC-V architecture.
This initiative allows for reduced licensing costs, encouraging innovation among Indian researchers and tech firms. The introduction of Dhruv64 aims to decrease India's reliance on imported microprocessors, which the country currently imports despite consuming 20% of the global market.
The processor will enhance security in sensitive sectors and contributes to a roadmap for indigenous chip development alongside other projects like Thejas32 and Dhanush+. This aligns with broader initiatives, including the India Semiconductor Mission and the Chips to Startup programme.
